Protesters clashed with police in Istanbul Thursday in a demonstration commemorating the murder of three Kurdish women in Paris last year. The protest turned violent after authorities refused a request from demonstrators to march to the French Consulate. When protesters refused to disperse, clashes broke out. Protesters resisted the police line, hitting out at the police’s shields, whilst riot police resorted to water cannons to clear the streets.
Around 500 people gathered at the city’s crowded Galatasaray Square in memory of the three women killed.
